24 Hours of D-Day Special Broadcast

Starting at 3am EDT, we are proud and honored to present the annual Complete Broadcast Day of D-Day. This is 24 hours of everything that went out over the air on CBS on June 6, 1944, rebroadcast by Rat Patrol Radio at the same time of day as originally aired!

This is probably as famous among our listeners as our Christmas playlist is, and Rat Patrol Radio was one of the first webcast stations ever to present these historic broadcasts in this format. This year marks our ninth year saluting the men who stormed Fortress Europe to put an end to Nazism. Join me as we relive the electrifying events of one of the most momentous events of the 20th Century. (I still choke up and get goosebumps at 10pm when FDR leads the nation in prayer.)

Trouble with Live 365 Player?

Norton Antivirus and the Adblock Plus plugin (for Firefox) are causing trouble with the Live 365 player. To fix the Adblock problem, go to www.live365.com and click the little Adblock Plus stopsign in the upper right of your browser, and allow ads for Live 365.

2009 Christmas Playlist is Live!

I’ve just uploaded an 18-hour Christmas playlist, set to choose songs randomly. I am still working on a “hand-crafted” playlist, but have been under the weather the last few days, so it isn’t quite ready yet. Remember to rate the songs you like (and don’t!), as I will be watching the ratings and swapping songs in and out.

Site customization is almost done. I’ve added some links on the right hand side under the title “Support RPR”, which you may not see if you have ad blocking software activated for this site.

The first is a link to buying a VIP Membership to Live 365, our hosting service for the station. A VIP Membership will not only let you listen to RPR commercial-free, but also allows access even if the station is at the listener limit. Not only does it work for RPR, but also for every one of the thousands of stations on the Live 365 network!

The second link is for PayPal donations. If you don’t care for PayPal, you can always purchase a Live 365 Gift Certificate for whatever amount you wish, which will go directly towards the bill for the broadcast service. Under “recipient’s email” use the hotmail address “ratpatrolradio.”

The third link is to the Rat Patrol Radio Post Exchange, aka our Cafepress store. Any item purchased gives RPR $2.00. I have personally ordered the coffee mug, tshirt, notebook, and large poster, and have been extremely pleased with them all.

The only things left to do are to get the RPR Pinup Girl logo on the masthead of the site, and decide whether to actually have an image gallery or not. Speaking of our “mascot”, she is on all the Cafepress items. Here is a close-up of the logo:

Work Progresses

I’m still working on customizing the new theme, though a lot of work is done. Still remaining is finding where the code is for the images along the right side and replacing them, and getting the RPR Pinup Girl logo on the masthead.

Also on the docket is getting the Christmas music ripped and uploaded. This means that some of the music presently in rotation will have to be deleted to make room. Also, a houseguest seems to have made off with some of my CDs, so I will have to build a new holiday playlist from scratch instead of using last year’s.

OMG, Another Theme!

Yes, another theme. The last one was so ugly I couldn’t bring myself to log in to post! Hopefully, I can hammer this one into something I like. It’s a good foundation, though a bit dark at the moment. The theme name is “Daily Minefield”- I’d love that name for a blog!

Please bear with me as I customize this. In the meantime, I’ll try to post WWII-related stuff more often!

Important D-Day Update!

I was going back through the D-Day files to tag them so that they were compliant with Live 365 rules, and realized that the third hour of the broadcast was identical to the 5th hour! I’ve scoured the Net for the correct file, but every source has the wrong file as the third hour. After overcoming my supreme mortification that I’ve been playing a bad file for the third hour for the last several years, I deleted all the files and am now uploading the NBC D-Day coverage that I recently found. I apologize in advance if the quality isn’t up to snuff, as I haven’t had time to listen to all 24 hours of programming. I only hope there isn’t any mistakes in this one!

On the bright side, those of you that have been tuning in over the years get a new perspective on D-Day!

D Day Special Broadcast

Please tune in this June 6th for our traditional D Day commemorative broadcast. We will be broadcasting everything that went out over the air from CBS New York, at the same time of day it was originally heard on June 6, 1944.

When the broadcast engineer at the New York studios realized shortly after 2AM on June 6, 1944, that the rumors that were being picked up from German radio were not another false alarm, he began recording everything that was broadcast, and continued for 24 hours. That remarkable record has been preserved, and Rat Patrol Radio is proud for the last eight years to bring our listeners the chance to relive one of the most momentous days in history.

As is tradition, we will also have an encore performance on June 7th, starting at 9AM Eastern time, so that more people can hear the early reports.
