Hey guys! I just wanted to make a quick update on the 1943 steel “War Pennies” that I’m giving away. I’ve learned that vinegar can clean zinc. Since these coins are all worn, and have no collectible (numismatic) value, I’m going to try and brighten up the zinc coating on them before sending them out.
I’m using one of them that has a rust patch on back as a test subject. That way, if something goes wrong, it’s no big loss. So far, it seems to be working (slowly). I can see tiny bubbles forming on the rim, where the steel was exposed when the pennies were first struck. Guess I should ready up on what vinegar does to steel before I try this again!
So, long story short: It will a couple more days for the steel pennies to be shipped out.
