US Marine Who Inspired HBO’s “The Pacific” Dies

Author Romus Valton “RV” Burgin, whose unflinching autobiography “Islands of the Damned: A Marine at War in the Pacific” helped inspire the HBO miniseries “The Pacific” has passed away, reports the Dallas Morning News.

Trained as a mortarman, Burgin’s skill with the weapon was a source of pride, and resulted in his being awarded the Bronze Star for wiping out a Japanese machinegun nest that had fellow Marines pinned.

Martin McCann played Burgin in episodes 5, 6, 7, 9, and 10 of the HBO miniseries “The Pacific” (HBO)
